I made my Hey Baby cake for my friend Katrina’s baby shower. I had just completed the first series of Wilton cake decorating classes and was eager to make cakes for other people.
Having found that my baking skills at a mile high plus aren't as successful as they were at sea level, I've gone to rely on mixes rather than making cakes from scratch. So I used Duncan Hines yellow cake mix.
However, I do make my “butter cream” frosting from scratch. I used the recipe I learned in my class. It’s Wilton’s basic frosting recipe of powdered sugar, shortening, powdered egg whites, and flavoring, but with my teacher’s changes – use water instead of milk, and add almond flavoring to the vanilla and butter flavorings, and use more butter flavoring. (All the flavorings I use are made by Wilton. They work very well since they don’t change the color of the frosting.)
I used Wilton’s Special Delivery baby
shower character pan and followed the directions on the label as to colors and what tips to use.
Since it was my first character cake, I spent a lot of time covering up mistakes, like too many crumbs in the frosting and parts of the cake being ripped away since my frosting was probably too stiff.
To cover up my boo-boos I decided to use a star tip and cover the whole cake. It took awhile, bu the results weren’t bad for my first attempt. By the time I was finished, the cake had a ton of frosting on it. But that was o.k. with me since I’m of the “more frosting is better” school.
I don’t think anyone noticed my mistakes either, as the cake disappeared pretty quickly at the baby shower.
Such a cute picture of baby shower cake!
