Quilted Baby Shower Cake
A quilted baby shower cake was created and submitted by Megan Mkrtschjan, from Lombard, Illinois. Very sweet!
This is a quarter sheet cake. I used thinned buttercream icing to seal in the crumbs and divided the cake into 12 squares along the top and 4 along the sides. They don't have to be exact dimensions.
The middle rectangle I "eyeballed" and will use that as the greeting area.
I used a pastry bag fitted with a Wilton tip 5 to draw the divisions. I let the icing harden for 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, I used a baby themed mold and white chocolate disks to create different baby shower items (bottles, booties, diaper pins, etc.) Let those harden for a couple hours.

Next, I tinted about 2 cups each of icing green, blue, yellow, and orange. Start with a little color and add more, if desired. I used a #18 open star tip to cover each square with a different color. You can easily create many different patterns. I did not use the open star in the center rectangle, I used a #47 basketweave tip to change the texture a bit.

After covering all of the squares with different colors, place the candy molds in each or some of the squares. I finished the bottom of the cake with the #5 round tip.
Another neat option would be to pipe a shell border at the bottom (you can use a variety of different sized tips, 15-17, for instance, and then use a petal tip (144-146) to create a ruffle over the shell.
Finish the cake with a greeting in the center, using a round tip 2, 3, or 4.
