Sleeping Baby Boy Shower Cake
I love how cuddly this sleeping baby boy shower cake is. Megan Mkrtschjan of Wheaton, Illinois put this masterpiece together. Thank you Megan!
A few days ahead of construction, I created baby "clothes" (diaper, bib, and onesie) and a sleeping baby using Wilton's Color Flow technique. That is, I prepared the Color Flow according to the package directions and "drew" the images on parchment paper (you could place a printed image under the paper and trace it, too). After letting the outline dry, you need to thin the Color Flow further and fill in the image using the thinned icing. Let dry for 48 hours.

For the eyes and pacifier on the baby I just piped some black buttercream (or royal icing would work, too) before I put it on the cake. There's no need to use Color Flow for that detail. If you don't feel comfortable using Color Flow, you could use royal icing, but it doesn't dry as hard as Color Flow. Also note that the Color Flow directions state that buttercream icing may make the Color Flow decorations disintegrate; however, I have never experienced that, so I wouldn't worry about that.

I used white buttercream icing to frost a 9x13 and a 6x6 cake. I created the clothesline on the sides of the 9x13 by using a large round tip and creating the posts and then using a small tip to make one long drop string starting at the top of one post and connecting to the top of the other.
On the top of the 6x6 cake I added "delphinium blue" drop flowers to make a "bed" for the sleeping baby. I would probably not use yellow centers the next time.
I placed the baby on the bed of drop flowers and used a bit of buttercream icing to glue the clothes on the clothesline. I finished it up with some borders and some curly blue ribbons. Any border would really be sufficient. I used a combination of pearl border on the bottom and small rosettes on the top borders.
The most memorable thing about this cake was that when I delivered it to the shower, they immediately asked me if it was okay to freeze because the guest of honor had gone into labor early that morning and the shower was postponed!
